Imphal, July 06 2009: Police today foiled a protest rally carried out demanding release of the five student volunteers arrested by the police and detained under NSA in connection with the professor Md Islamuddin murder case on May 25 last.

The rally participated by mostly students and womenfolk kicked off from the Lamlong Higher Secondary School, Khurai Lamlong Bazar with the slogans demanding un-conditional release of the detained students stating that they were not undergrounds.

The rally marching on the Imphal-Ukhrul road towards the Shajiwa Jail was blocked by a police team near the Khurai Popular High School.

While women participating in the rally are engaging in heated arguments with the police, a team of Imphal east police commandos arrived and assisted the police team in foiling the rally.

The rally was mainly participated by students of Lainingthou Awangba School, Khurai Girls Higher Secondary School, Success School, Blooming High School, Sajor High School and Popular High School.

No injury occurred during the police dispersion act of the police but a youth name Kumam Shinghajit (28) son of K Tomba of Moirang Khunou was picked up by the police and after detaining him for some brief period released.

On the other hand, protestors participating in sit-in protest staged at various places also burnt down effigies of chief minister.

Womenfolk staged the sit-in protest at SI Academy, Poropmat, New Chekon, Soibam Leikai, New Lambulane, Kongpal Iralphum, Top Khongngangmokhong etc.
