Imphal, June 03 2009: The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has today urged the government not to forcibly label students' leaders as members of outlawed organisations.

Taking serious note over the attitude of the government towards students, a statement issued by the publicity and propaganda of DESAM, KC Ibomcha stated that students of the state have been maliciously treated by the government.

Stating that DESAM, as one of the students' bodies, has been striving to elevate the students of the state so as to enable them compete the world, the statement lamented the attitude of the Chief Minister towards the students' body.

A case in point is the bigoted treatment meted to DESAM's Education Secretary, Arambam Thoithoi, who has suffered mental harassment and discriminatory treatment at the hands of the government, it stated.

It also took note that he has been made to sign on blank sheet, threatened with spiteful words, interrogated in open by-lanes instead of carrying out such thing at police stations.

The DESAM statement pointed out that it has been done for exposing the covert deeds of some who use to bribe, and who want to enjoy interest without works in the Education department.

The statement charged that the government has been trying to label them members of outlawed militants thinking that they would not be able to fulfill their desire if many students like Thoithoi come to the scene.

Quality control in the substandard construction of some educational buildings, opposing the corrupt and dishonest appointment in Education department, checking the practice of favouritism and making students pass in matriculation examination through backdoor are some of the works Thoithoi had done, the statement added.

The statement further observed that the move of the government in this regard is to prevent them from interfering in the dirty way of minting money.

DESAM is not daunted by the move of the Chief Minister and Education Minister who dare not care for the development of education in the state as their wards studied outside to curb the reformation act of Thoithoi and his likes, the statement asserted.

It also stated that the government's strategy to link DESAM with the MUSU election and casting the students' body in the wrong light in connection with the killing of Prof Islamuddin is not a new development but which has been carried 0n their lips.

It is the continuation of fake encounter killing, the statement pointed out.

Instead of taking action based on the revelation of the IRB personnel involved in the killing, the government has tried to put the blame on innocent students, the statement decried while adding that it indicates a hidden agenda of the government over the killing.

Why the government is not acting openly in case the IRB personnel revealed that the students were involved in the killing?, it asked.
