Cry for release of students getting louder

Imphal, June 01 2009: After the condemnations of the killing of Prof Islamuddin, now a multitude of press releases issued by various organisations demanding immediate release of the 13 arrested students has been flooding in the media offices.

Many unions, clubs, associations and organisations, while expressing condemnation and condolence over the killing of Prof Islamuddin by KYKL on the campus of Manipur University on May 25 last, have appealed to the state government to release the arrested students of the university and leaders of student organisations.

The Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur (ZSUM) expressing disappointment over the killing of the Professor appealed to all the groups in the state not to take up such activity in any institutions in future for the sake of students.

ZSUM also appealed to the state government to release the arrested students' leaders within the period given by Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) failing which ZSUM Imphal area will support any agitation taken up by both AMSU and DESAM in a press release issued by its General Secretary Lantah Golmei Kenedy.

The Naharol Club Kangmong (NCK) stated that the arrest of innocent students from the University hostel and also from their residents by the state police after the killing of Professor Md Islamuddin is not an appropriate step but it may become a reason to aggravate the situation.

There is a high possibility of breaking down the academic calendar as the university campus is devastated.

Teachers and students of the university could not undertake the MA/MSc/MCom semester examinations.

Appealing to release the arrested students soon, NCK expressed to support all agitations to release the innocent students in a press release signed by its Secretary K Bobo.

The Nongshum Khunoug Chaokhat Lamjing Nupi Marup and the Nongshum Yakairol Leishem Youth Club in separate press releases issued by their Secretaries A Pramo and Y Basanta respectively stated that the arrest of innocent students by the state government in relation to the murder of Professor Md Islamuddin is inappropriate and is inviting a larger turmoil in the academic environment of the state.

The statements appealed to stop further chasing of students and release the arrested students as soon as possible.

Demanding quick release of the arrested students the Young Development Union Club, Wangoi appealed to the state government to bring an amicable solution into the matter soon and restore peace in the academic environment.

The statement also expressed gratitude to DESAM for taking back the general strike in interest of the students and general public and also appealed to the government to release the arrested students soon without any condition in interest of the general public in a press release issued by its General Secretary W Pramod.

The Youth Progressive Front (YPF) of Yaingangpokpi disapproved the arrest of the innocent students stating that it will serve a purpose to aggravate the social situation despite the proscribed KYKL has owned up killing of Professor Md Islamuddin.

YPF appealed to the state government to stop chasing after students and release the arrested students soon without any condition and try to restore a peaceful academic environment in the state in a press release issued by its Secretary K Joykumar.

The Students' Union of Wangoi Higher Secondary School in a press releae signed by its General Secretary, M Bhorot appealed the state government to release the arrested students soon and avail the students of the society a peaceful academic environment.

The Eastern Youth Welfare Organisation of Bamon Kampu Awang Leikai expressed gratefulness to DESAM for their relaxation of the general strike taking into account of the possible inconvenience to the general public and stated that it is inapt for the state government to detain innocent students of the state despite KYKL has owned up the killing of Professor Md Islamuddin in media.

The Organisation appealed to the state government to stop chasing after innocent students and release the arrested students soon without any condition in order to restore a peaceful academic environment in a press release issued by its Secretary, N Prahlada.

The Education and Cultural Upliftment Association of Kangmong (ECUAK) and United Women's Development Organisation of Nambol (UWDO) in separate press releases issued by the General Secretary of ECUAK, L Jibankumar and Joint Secretary of UWDO, L Premila Leima expressed deep condolence over the killing of Professor Md Islamuddin by the proscribed KYKL and appealed to all related groups not to take up such activities in future and also appealed the state government to bring into amicable solution and restore peace in the society.

Expressing gratefulness to DESAM for their relaxation of the general strike for the sake of the students the statements appealed to take up some other form of agitation other that general strikes and bandh.

UWDO appealed immediate release of the arrested students.
