Police say, they are involved in murder of Prof Islamuddin

Imphal, May 27 2009: Thirteen student volunteers of AMSU, DESAM and MSF who were arrested by Manipur police in connection with the killing of Prof Md Islamuddin were produced in the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal at Lamphelpat today and have been remanded in police custody till June 2 for further investigation.

Among the 13 student leaders who have been remanded in police custody is Arambam Thoithoi, Secretary of Education and Academic Affairs, DESAM.

The student volunteers of AMSU, DESAM and MSF were arrested in the aftermath of the killing of Prof Md Islamuddin in the afternoon of May 25 in the MU campus.

An FIR case has been registered with the Singjamei Police Station under IPC Section 123, 302, 120-B, 34, Section 16, 18, 20 of UA(P)A and Section 25 (1-B) of Arms Act against the 13 students.

Meanwhile, a press release issued today by Senior SP Imphal West District Police, L Kailun stated that 13 persons have arrested in connection with the murder of Prof Islamuddin of Economics Department of Manipur University.

According to the statement, the SDPO/Imphal West is investigating the case of the murder and the arrested persons will be in police custody till June 2.It further stated that the investigation of the case is directly supervised by the SP, Imphal West and added that it is in progress.

The arrested students were produced before Addl CJM, Imphal RK Memcha today.

The arrested students are volunteers of DESAM, Laishram Bijen (25) of Kha Sanjenbam Leikai, Khomdram Ranbir (26) of Lamphel, Kshetrimayum Ranjan (28) of Kongpal Naoroibam Leikai, Thoudam Shyam (33) of Thoubal Leishangthem, Phijam Dinesh (29) of Changangei Mamang Leikai, Arambam Thoithoi (28) of Khurai Nandeibam Leikai and Laishram Joyprakash (30) of Utlou Mayai Leikai.

The volunteers of AMSU are Namoijam Dinesh (19) of Oinam Utlou Mamang Leikai, Sairem Robindro (26) of Namchol Kha Jiri andWahengbam Bijoy (27) of Toubul Maning Leikai.

The volunteer of MSF arrested has been identified as RK Suresh (28) of Kakwa Ashem Leikai.

Thangjam Nandakishore (30) of Ukhongsang Mamang Leikai who is one of arrested students has been charged as being an activist of UNLF and another student identified as Kshetrimayum Kiran (29) of Kakching Khunnou has also been accused of being an activist of KYKL by the police.

Singjamei police produced all the 13 persons in the court of Addl CJM, Imphal and prayed the court to grant them remand in police custody for 10 days for further investigation into the murder of Prof Islamuddin.

After hearing the prayer of the Counsel, the Addl CJM granted remand in police custody till 1 pm of June 2, and directed the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case to give proper medical aid to those in the police custody.

In their petition, the police informed the court that the 13 persons were arrested in connection with the murder of Prof Islamuddin and incriminating documents related to UGs had been recovered from them.

Some of them during interrogation have admitted of being involved in the murder of the professor.

The murder of the professor is connected with the recently held election of Manipur Univesity Students' Union (MUSU) 2009-10 .

The police also informed the court that DESAM/KYKL, AMSU/UNLF and MSF/PLA were intimidating the Vice Chancellor of MU, Prof C Amuba and chairman of the election committee, research scholar of Political Science Department, NG Jashobanta.

Therefore it would be dangerous to release the accused persons, the police said and prayed the court to further remand them in police custody.
