Imphal, March 22 2009: The 48-hour state-wide general strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the killing of Priyobarta in the state of Manipur concluded on Sunday without much impact as a whole except along the Mayang Imphal road stretch of the deceased locality at Monsangei Imphal West district.

Priyobarta, 25, s/o A.Rajen of Mongsangei Boroi Makhong in Imphal West was, as per reports, killed in an encounter with the Imphal East police commandos on March 15 at Langol in Imphal West.

However, the report was denied by the family and held that the victim was innocent and that he was killed in a fake encounter.

In this connection, the JAC while asserting that the government of Manipur has failed in providing justice and truth besides relief measures in the brutal murder of Akoijam Priyobarta alias Bachou of Mangsangei in Imphal West, had called a 48-hour state-wide bandh starting from midnight of Friday.The bandh concluded on Sunday without any major incident and much impact except for blocking roads by burning tyre and blocking roads using log along the Mayai Lambi area preventing movement of vehicles by the local meira paibis (women activists).

However, normal traffic were seen in Imphal and all government institutes including almost all the private firms remained unaffected and the business establishments carried out its functioning as usual.
