Grocery hawker shot dead

Imphal, December 15 2009: A non-local hawker of grocery items was shot dead by suspected UG activists at Pangei under Heingang Police Station in Imphal East District Tuesday taking the toll to non-locals killed by miscreants in Manipur to 25 (excluding six who survived of the attacks) during the current year 2009 till date.

Two gunmen in a motorcycle pumped at least seven bullets to the non local later identified as Deepak Kumar Shahu (27) son of Ramnath Shahu was travelling on the road opposite to Sainik School, Imphal with his wares on a bicycle.

Two bullets also grazed on his right hand.

He was immediately rushed to the JN Hospital, Porompat by the locals of the area where he was declared brought dead by the doctors there.

Deepak, a resident of Assam's Karbi Anglong district currently was staying at Telipati, Imphal at his wife's parental home.

He came around four year back.

Family came to know the sad news only after they contacted him on his mobile to inform serious condition of his ailing nine month old son and for hospitalization.

Family said that he went for his business of the day at about 7 am.

His travelling there is amidst the strong warning from the police not to move out beyond the Imphal Municipality area considering their security.

Deepak was the 25th victims of miscreants attack to non-locals in Manipur by suspected militants.

Suspected militants started attacking non-locals since February last apparently link with series of killing of militants and its overground workers by the security forces in alleged 'fake encounter'.

Till date atleast 24 non-locals have been shot dead while six other inflicted injuries by the miscreants.

The most deadly instants were killing of nine non-locals together at Keibul Lamjao National park in Loktak Lake on May 11 and four labourers together inside the Central Agricultural University Campus on the night of June 11 .

On may 11, unidentified militants kill nine non-locals inside the Keibul Lamjao National Park at Khordak Awang Leikai area in Bishnupur District apparently in militants' revenge to the killing of the counter-insurgency operation (Summer Storm) conducted jointly by the Army and Manipur Police in April 2009 .

On June 11 also four non-local labourers were killed and one more injured when unidentified militants open fire on them inside the Central Agriculture University campus at Iroisemba under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West District.
