SI hurt in shootout; Six injured in grenade blasts

Imphal, November 03 2009: A shootout at high security zone, Babupara this evening left a Sub-Inspector of police commando injured.

The injured Sub-Inspector is the son of a woman CDPO who was shot dead by an underground organisation some time back.

Meanwhile, six persons sustained injuries when two hand grenades exploded at different places today.

The shootout at Bapupara in front of the Job Centre opposite to Telephone Bhavan that left the SI injured occurred at about 4.15 pm.

Around 10 rounds of gun-shots were heard people who were present near the spot at the time of the incident.

Police said that the shootout happened when a miscreant opened fire towards some police commandos who were on the looked out for some insurgents.

On a tip off that some insurgents were coming to the place to collect extortion money, the police personnel were waiting for the insurgents.

Suspected undergrounds who apparently recognised the police commandos in civil dress opened fire towards the police commandos.

The police SI has been identified as Saikhom Ningtamba (28), son of late Brajagopal of Hoabam Marak Keisham Leikai.

He is the son of CDPO of Moirang ICDS office, Saikhom ongbi Rameshwori, who was shot dead by activists of an underground outfit inside her own office around two years back.

According to police sources, on seeing the police commandos, the UGs opened fire towards the police commandos and escaped from the spot on an auto-rickshaw.

Police excercised utmost restraint in retaliation so as to avoid any casualty to the civilians keeping in mind the July 23 incident, they said.

According to eyewitness accounts, the man who fired the shot was seen going together with the injured SI before the incident occurred.

Before the incident occurred, there erupted a heated argument between the escaped person who fired the gun to the sub-inspector.

People nearby also heard of saying that they belong to same and both have arms in their possession.

All of a sudden, they took out small arms in their possession and fired each other.

The other unknown person ran away toward the Kalimai Mandir after the shooting at sub-inspector.

Despite injury, the sub-inspector chased after the person by firing by shouting to stop "Ngaikho, Ngaikho" .

In the aftermath of the incident additional SP (ops) and OC of the commando unit rushed to the spot and conducted further search operation to nab the escaping miscreant(s).

But there were no reports of rounding up any persons involved in the incident.

On the other hand, At least six persons injured in two separate bomb blast incidents occurred in different parts of the state in the last two days.

In another instant of bomb blast at Khwatha Khunou near the international border pillar no.82 yesterday evening at around 5.45 pm.

At least five persons sustained splinters injuries when a bomb blasted in front of the Sangai Express and Matamgi Yaikairol offices standing abreast this late evening around 4.50 o'clock along the Sega road.

The injured persons have been identified as Thokchom Binoy (40) son of Darmo of Loklaobung, Moirangkhom, Konthoujam Kumar (45) son of late Ibobi of Lairenjam Makha Leikai Arambam Arambam Phony (55) son of Iboton of Keishampat Elangbam Leikai, Seram Dilip (47) son of S Gulap of Takhellambam Leikai and Konjengbam Shitaljit (54) son of Selungba of Moirang Konjeng Leikai presently residing at Sangaiporou, Imphal.

Binoy is the staff of the Yaikairol.

He sustained splinter injury at the right calf.

Kumar is a government employee and injured at left calf.

Phony injured at the knee, Dilip at the right thigh and Shitaljit at left side of the waist.

They were pedestrians and moving on the vehicle at the place when the bomb went off.

Shataljit was travelling on the road on his Maruti car (MN01K-0101).Some damages also occurred at the windshield and other parts of the vehicles.

The bomb exploded on the road.

Police recovered the lever of a hand grenade later from the spot.

None witness how the bomb exploded.

At the time of blast a convoy two vehicles of security forces coming towards Imphal side passed through.

People speculated the bomb being felled down from the security personnel.

In another bomb blast incident yesterday at Kwatha village located near the international border pillar no.82, a villager sustained splinters injury at the face.

The injured person has been brought up at Moreh Community Health Centre today.

The identity of the injured person and how the bomb blast occurred could not be immediately confirmed by the report.

In another incident, a bomb hurled by miscreants failed to explode at Singjamei Oinam Thingel under Singjamei police station.

Whether the bomb targeted to a house or to the convoy of Assam Rifles just pass by on the road could not be ascertained.

The China make hand grenade was hurled by some miscreants at about 11 am.

It felled at the drainage near by a shop at Oinam Thingel.

Whether the bomb targeted to a newly constructed house belonging to one Bachajpatimayum Abhiram of Thoubal or to the security forces could not be revealed as around the time, a convoy of Assam Rifles moved on the road, according to locals.
