Bomb hoax disrupts traffic

Imphal, November 03 2008: MANIPUR'S CAPITAL is warped in fear following serial terror blasts in neighboring Assam.

The normal traffic in the heart of the city and Indo-Myanmar highway (NH 39) remained affected for almost an hour following detection of a red carry bag suspected to be a bomb in front of the southern gate of Raj Bhavan today.

The suspected bomb which turned out to be a hoax was detected by the security guards of the Raj Bhavan, where state Governor Gurbachan Jagat resides.

The incident took place when the CRPF men who guard the Raj Bhavan saw a red bag containing some rice lying near their gate after an unknown person reportedly left it at around 11 a.m.Imphalites are yet to recover the pain after the October 21 blast at Ragailong village which claimed lives of 17 persons and injuring over 30.Later a police bomb squad team led by Additional Director General of Police A Romenkumar and Senior Superintendent of Police L Kailun rushed to the area and seized the bag.

Meanwhile, functionaries of the United NGOs Mission Manipur and North East Dialogue Forum appealed to all the organizations and both state and central governments to protect the lives of the people in the wake of recent terror blasts in NE state particularly in Assam.

In the October 30 serial blast in Assam, over 80 people were killed over 300 injured while in Manipur blast on October 21,it claimed the lives of 17 persons injuring 31 others.

Similarly during Agartala serial blast on October 1 last two lost their lives and 41 others injured seriously.

Rev Tamthing Ruivanao, Chairman UNMM, U Nobokishore, Secretary NE Dialogue Forum and ZM Peter, Executive Committee member in a joint statement here said the people of north east are now becoming victims of violent acts due to the endless killings and catastrophic causalities inflicted by the "inhumane acts".

The functionaries also appealed to state and non-state actors not to recur such instances in future.

"We appeal to stop violence for what so ever the reason" they said while interacting with media here on Monday and added "Enough is enough".They also urge the government to give serious attention of "this kind of human disaster".

Lamenting the silence of civil societies organization as well as the students bodies over the recent terror blasts in the region, O J Metei, another representative said the time has come for a public uproar across the region as the serial unfortunate incidents targets only the civilians.

Echoing a similar feeling and expressing concern over the target of civlians, Mangsatabam Sobita, Secretary Women Action for Development said that the time has come for the people of north east to fight together for a peaceful environment.

"If the present trend continues,we don't see any hope,our future will be difficult" Nobokishore said.

However we don't want presence of more military in the name of countering it,he said, "Government should seriously think about initiating a meaningful negotiation".
