Four UG suspects shot dead

Imphal, April 29 2009: In unrelated violent incidents atleast four suspected underground activists were gunned down by security forces while UG suspects shot dead another person, who reportedly lost his younger brother to similar fate some months back.

In the latest incident that occurred at around 9.30 tonight at Phumlou under Lamshang police station, a team of Imphal West police commando slain a person.

One 9 mm pistol has been recovered from the possession of the deceased person whose body has been retrieved by a police team.

Earlier, a combined force of Imphal West Police Commandos and personnel of 12 Maratha Light Infantry shot dead three suspected underground activists during an encounter which took place at Hiyangthang Tarahei Awang, near Heibok Ching Phuril under Wangoi Police Station of Imphal West District at around 3.20 pm today.

According to a statement issued in connection with the encounter, Senior SP of Imphal West District L Kailun informed that following specific information about the presence of under activists, a team of Imphal West Police Commandos under the command of Inspector Th Krishnatombi Singh, OC, Cdo/Imphal West along with a column of 12 Maratha Light Infantry led by Major PK Singh and Lt Vikram Singh rushed to the area.

On reaching the location, the security team was fired upon heavily from sophisticated weapons.

The security personnel also retaliated the firing immediately.

In the retaliatory action of the security team three unknown armed militants were shot dead.

Further search of the area after the encounter led to recovery of one AK-56 Rifle with 12 rounds, one M-20 pistol with three rounds, two Chinese hand grenades and Rs 2,695 in cash.

One driving license issued in the name of one Kshetrimayum Sanjit Singh s/o Jiten of Kakwa Naorem Leikai was found from the possession of one of the slain militants, the Sr SP informed, adding that the bodies have been evacuated to RIMS mortuary for post-mortem and identification.

However, according to information received by the press, their bullet riddled bodies were found inside the complex of an abandoned quarter of the water supply scheme constructed on an open space near Kongjil Chingjin and the recovered items included one AK-Rifle loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition, five empty cartridges, one M-20 pistol loaded with three bullets and two Chinese-made hand grenades.

Contrary to the police report, sources also said that driving license found inside the wallet of the slain UG suspects from whom one pistol and one hand grenade have been recovered was issued in the name of one Lourembam Yaiphaba (20) s/o Tomba of Jiribam Leingangpokpi.

The slain UG who was found lying with the AK Rifles was clad in blue jean pant and black T-shirt while the other who was found along with one Chinese hand grenade was clad in grey jean pant, black T-shirt and grey canvass shoes with amulets on his waist and arm.

Meanwhile, the identity of the remaining suspected KCP (MC) cadre out of the two of them shot dead by a combined force of Imphal East Police Commandos and personnel of 28 Assam Riffles during an encounter on the night of April 23 near Jubaraj Palli Pukhri Achouba which connects Khongman and Ucheckon has also been established today.

He was one Longjam Mani alias Johnson (21) of Sekmaijin Bazar.

It is said Mani had been brought up by his 60-year old grandmother Thongam Ongbi Yaima Devi after both his parents deserted him while he was very young.

His father married another woman and settled at Wangoi Bazar and his mother had also married another man.

Around two years back, he left home to join KYKL.

There had been an instance in which he ran out from the outfit along with arms.

Last month, Mani had allegedly come wearing uniform along with an AR team at Sekmaijin in the night.

The body has been handed over to his grandmother after post-mortem examination at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital today.

One shot dead: Hardly four months after the younger brother was killed, the elder was shot dead by unidentified persons yesterday.

The deceased identified as Shijagurumayum Ubil (35) s/o late Bir of Sekta Makha Leikai under Lamlai police station was shot dead right at the courtyard of his residence at about 7.50 pm yesterday, informed a police source.

Fatal bullet wounds were observed on different parts including head.

The unidentified gun men reportedly forcibly called out Ubil from inside the house on the pretext of talking about some matter.

Ubil's younger brother Surjit alias Sharma (30), a Rifleman in 4th IRB was shot dead by unidentified persons at Loushangkhong after abducting Surjit together with his wife and two sons from Napetpalli on December 27 last year.

The gun men spared Surjit's wife and sons.

At the time, Surjit was under suspension on the charge of being involved with a gang of thieves, all clad in black attires.

Although the motive and identity of the killers could not be established, Ubil's corpse has been handed over to family members after post mortem at RIMS today.
