MUSU calls general strike

Imphal, May 25 2009: Denouncing the act of killing Prof Islamuddin, the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has called a 12 hour state-wide general strike with effect from 6 am tomorrow.

Speaking to media persons this afternoon, MUSU president in-charge Thangal Yumnamcha said that MUSU condemns the brutal killing of a teacher without conducting any trial.

Asserting that the act was aimed at vitiating the atmosphere of Manipur University, he appealed to all concerned not to repeat such acts in future.

Councillor of Anthropology Department Okram Rabikanta said that MU students would launch a protest demonstration by wearing black badges from May 27 .

Meanwhile, shocked by the killing of Prof Islamuddin, the All Manipur Muslim Girls Students' Union has declared an indefinite ban on Manipur University.

The union's president M Ruksher while pointing out lapses in the security arrangement of MU, demanded necessary action against the security personnel deployed today.

Demanding fitting punishment of all those involved in the killing, the Union urged all concerned to clarify and state whether Prof Islamuddin was proclaimed guilty in any incident concerning the activities and functioning of the University in any manner.
