Sharmila operated upon, lump removed

Imphal, March 25: Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been on a fast unto death agitation for the more than six years now demanding removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, was operated upon at Shija Hospital and Research Institute here today to remove a lump which started appearing on her chin.

Briefing mediapersons in this connection, Managing Director of Shija Hospitals and Plastic surgeon Dr Kh Palin informed that the lump that appeared on the chin of Sharmila was due to fat deposit and it required a minor operation called liposuction to remove it.

The operation took just 25 minutes and the lump was removed successfully, Dr Palin said, adding that local anaesthesia had to be used for the operation.

After six months of continued campaign against AFSPA at the National capital New Delhi, Sharmila returned to Imphal on March 4.On the same day she was arrested along with her brother Shinghajit while they were trying to gain entry to Kangla Fort to offer prayer.

Since then Sharmila has been lodged in the security ward of JN Hospital where she is continuing her fight against the Army Act.

Sharmila began her agitation after Assam Rifles personnel killed 10 innocent people in indiscriminate firing at Malom Lamkhai on November 2, 2000.Sharmila is being nose-fed by the Government.
