Adamant JAC to go ahead with stir

Imphal, February 25: With the appeal of the public of Khangabok to chief Minister O Ibobi singh to secure the early release of one Maibam Naobi Chanu evoking lukewarm response, the JAC has decided to go ahead with the 24 hour general strike to protest the girl's detention.

M Naobi of Yairipok Leirongthel was arrested by Thoubal police after the funeral service of Kh Bikash of the PLA.

Bikash took part in the attack on a team of Thoubal police commandos in which four personnel includings it OC, N Lokhon were killed on February 20. Speaking to the media at Manipur press Club today, co-convenor of JAC Against the torture and Detention of M Naobi Chanu, B Kamala Devi said that representatives of the JAC called on the Chief Minister today and submitting a memorandum pleading for the girl's release.

The CM is informed to have cited inability to secure the release as an FIR had already been registered against Naobi and he could not intervene until disposition of the case legally.

B Kamala, however, informed that the Chief Minister insisted that at the most he could shorten the girl's judicial remand period.

As the JAC's intimation to release Naobi Chanu today noon failed to materialise the decision to go ahead with the general strike from February 26 midnight was taken, the co-convenor maintained while listing appropriate action against commando personnel involved in arresting M Naobi Chanu, medical check-up of the detained girl and compensation to injured persons as other contents of the memorandum presented to the CM.

On the other hand, one of three women picked up by Thoubal police personnel while attending Kh Bikash's Mangani Leihun and released today displayed several bruise marks allegedly sustained in police custody.

the woman named heikrujam Kumari alias Rasheshwari (50) of nongbram Awang Leikai bore several blood clotting marks on the thighs, back, forearm and arm areas.

joining the press briefing, naobi's mother M Maipak Devi also narrated her endeavours soon after her daughter's arrest proving futile for the last many days.

When she finally managed to meet her daughter at Lilong police station today Naobi attired in new clothing as her previous dresses were allegedly torn apart by commando personnel, contended Maipak Devi.

Naobi Chanu is said to be a teacher of Yairipok Changamdabi Public School.

meanwhile, the JAC co-convenor asserted that the general strike call has full backing of Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi manipur, and preparedness of several Thoubal district-based social and women organisations to enforce the agitation.
