Two suspected militants killed in separate incidents

Kohima, March 20 2009: Atleast two suspected underground activists have been killed by conbined forces in separate incidents of shoot out that occurred in different parts of the State today.

In the first encounter which took place at Samaram Maning Leikai in Thoubal District today morning, a combined force of Thoubal Police Commandos and personnel of 34 Assam Rifles shot dead a UG suspect.

According to a statement issued by Senior SP of Thoubal District Clay Khongai, the encounter broke out while a combined force of Thoubal District Police Commandos and personnel of 34 Assam Rifles was conducted search operation based on specific information about the presence of UG cadres in the surrounding areas of Samaram and Marongband.

As the combined force started cordoning off Samaram Maning Leikai for the operation at around 4.10 am, 2/3 suspected UG cadres were seen going towards a nearby Bamboo groove.To establish their identities, the combined force shouted at them but the suspected UG cadres opened fire prompting the combined force to retaliate.

After the firing exchange which lasted for about 5 minutes, search of the area led to the recovery of a body though the rest managed to escape, the statement of the SSP said, adding ha one 9 mm pistol and a magazine loaded with three rounds of ammunition have been recovered from the possession of the slain UG suspect.

On the other hand, according to information received by the press, the slain person is likely to be one Waikhom Amumacha (25) s/o Tenden of Langmeidong Mamang Leikai.

In the second encounter, a combined force of Imphal West Police Commandos and personnel of 15 Assam Rifles killed another UG suspect at Kangchup hillock at around 6 pm today.

Police report said that the encounter took place near the water filter point of Patbung Kuki village located atop Kangchup hillock.

One SLR has been recovered from the possession of the slain UG suspect, the police report said, adding that the body has been picked up and deposited at RIMS morgue.
