Two migrant workers shot dead

Imphal, December 17 2009: In continued attack on migrant workers, unidentified armed persons gunned down two persons after barging into the rented room where they were sleeping on their beds last night at Chingmeirong Kabui village here.

According to police report, out of the two victims, Gajinder Ram (50) has come to visit Manipur just one week back while Subhas Yadav (30) was engaged in manufacturing ice and goes around peddling the ice slabs.

Both of them were sleeping inside the rented room when the unidentified armed attackers barged inside after breaking down the wall and shot dead them at around 9.40 pm yesterday.

Both the victims bore fatal bullet marks on their respective heads.

Police have reportedly recovered two empty cartridges of 9 mm pistol from the site of the crime.

Lamphel police have taken up a case and investigation started to nab the killers.

A resident of Darwa village under Motihari district of Bihar, Gajinder had come to visit his son-in-law Prabu Ram (35) who is also engaged in manufacturing ice and lives in a rented room at Chingmeirong Kabui village.

On the other hand, Subhas Yadav hailed from Cachar Chingdong Leikai of Assam.

Besides manufacturing ice, he also goes around peddling ice slabs.

The bereaved family members have been informed.

But what can we do and say in the regard, Prabhu Ram, who comes from Darhaba, said.

Following renewed attack on migrant workers in the past couple of days after a lull, a joint meeting of the senior police officers has discussed the preventive measures to be taken up in this regard.

One of the senior police officers said that police suspected involvement of armed UG groups in these attacks.

However, which UG group is actually behind these attacks has not been confirmed.

Nonetheless, efforts are being made to find out whose hands are behind these attacks so as to take up necessary action against it.

The security measures put in place for the safety o the migrant workers are still in force.

So the killers may have changed their strategies, the police officer added.
