AR slays two; slain identified

Imphal, January 17 2010: Troops of 12 Assam Rifles have reportedly gunned down two underground members during the course of an operation conducted in Kamjong sub-division area at about 12.30 pm today.

A statement issued by the PRO IGAR (S) said a firefight broke out when the AR troops were launching the operation at the south of Konkan along the Kamjong-Mulvailup road.

Informing that the slain persons are likely to belong to the UNLF organisation, the statement listed one G-3 rifle with magazine and eight rounds, one 303 rifles with magazine and 15 rounds and a Japanese make hand-held radio as items recovered from the victims, whose bodies have been deposited at RIMS morgue in late evening.

In another release, the PRO informed of arrest of a KCP (MC) cadre by troops of 31 AR from Pangal basti area of Chandel district this morning.

Identifying the captive as Bobol alias Safiqur Rehman (21) s/o Azijur Rehman of Sora, the release added that cash amount of Rs 1400 and register containing suspicious mobile numbers were recovered from the individual, who has been handed over to Imphal West police station.

Meanwhile, identity of one of the slain UG suspects out of two killed by a combined force of Imphal East District Police Commandos and personnel of 28 Assam Rifles in a reported encounter last night along the Wakha Lambi Yangbi Khunou under Porompat Police Station has been established today.

He was one Oinam Joyshanker (29) s/o Joy of Khurai Soibam Leikai.

It is said that he had come out from jail after being arrested by the police on alleged charge of being a member of the proscribed PREPAK some weeks earlier.

He had gone out from home yesterday afternoon but failed to return home.

The body has been handed over to his family members after post-mortem examination at RIMS today.

The other victim is yet to be identified.
