Imphal, July 15 2009: Imphal West SSP, L Kailun has informed the general public that the 120 hours bandh called by DESAM is illegal and uncalled for.

A press release of the SSP said, "Those so-called student leaders were not arrested as student leaders or leaders of DESAM but for their involvement in criminal acts of killing Prof Islamuddin of Manipur University on May 25.They were arrested and detained under NSA based on available evidence".

The SSP further sought co-operation from the general public in curbing the alleged illegal bandh, which causes general hardship, especially to the poor and daily wage earners.

The SSP added that the district police would come out strongly against those who have imposed the bandh as well as supporters who indulge in illegal activities.

Maximum deployment of security forces has been effected to assist and provide security to the general public, vegetables vendors and office goers etc, he added.

L Kailun further said that any information of bandh supporters/miscreants indulging in illegal activities may be reported to telephone number 2450214 of the district police Control Room.

Meanwhile, Bishnupur SP, Jayanta has also urged the general public not to support the bandh called by DESAM but to attend their respective daily affairs.

Maintaining that adequate security arrangements have been made to provide safety to the general public, the SP in a statement further cautioned that the bandh supporters would be dealt severely as per law.
