Sentry on duty clubbed to death

Imphal, January 15 2009: It sounds bizarre but an IRB personnel on sentry duty within the office complex of Imphal East police station has been killed by some unidentified persons and the service LMG taken away along with ammunition.

The IRB personnel found done to death at his own den this morning has been identified as Md Sikandar (32) of Kwakta Khuman but staying at Hatta Golapati.

It is reported that Sikandar was clubbed to death with a heavy rod.

He left behind his wife and two kids.

Sikander was a Rifleman in the 1st IRB but attached to Imphal East SP as a commando.

Except for the enquiry that has been ordered, police authorities have been refusing to make any comment on the killing.

However, the bereaved family disclosed that police have expressed suspicion about KCP (MC)'s hand in the killing.

On the other hand, in connection with the killing, a Joint Action Committee has been constituted with voluntary organisations of Kwakta Khuman and Hatta Golapati.

The JAC has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister in-charge Th Debendra.

The memorandum however was submitted was after at least three women and two police personnel sustained injuries when police tried to block and pacify a large crowd led by the JAC functionaries came to submit the memorandum to the Chief Minister's official complex.

During the meeting with JAC members including MLA Mairenbam Prithiviraj, Th Debendra said that the memorandum would be handed over to Chief Minister O Ibobi just as he arrives at Imphal tomorrow.

The Chief Minister in-charge also assured that he would talk with the Chief Minister about the incident and urged upon the Government to extend all possible benefits to the bereaved family.

Following the assurance of the CM in-charge that all the demands contained in the memorandum are justified and the same will fulfilled soon, the JAC has decided to claim the corpse tomorrow.

Earlier speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club here, JAC president Md Kazir Hussain demanded that as the death of Md Sikandar who left his rented house for sentry duty yesterday was highly suspicious, an independent judicial enquiry should be instituted into the killing.

He also demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakhs and provision of full salaries to the bereaved family till the time Sikandar should retire and enjoy pension.

Other demands of the JAC include a suitable Government job to a member of the family and completion of all enquiries into the killing within the month of January.

Taking part in the press meet, Sikandar's widow Fadima disclosed that police have reportedly expressed their suspicion about KCP (MC) cadres sneaking into the SP's office complex and killing the commando personnel.

Informing that it has been more than a year since Sikandar had been attached to the office of SP Imphal East, Fadima said that her husband had sentry duty from 9 pm to 12 pm last night.

She was informed about the mysterious death of her husband at about 4 am this morning.

On checking, Sikandar was found killed with his skull broken.

Expressing deep suspicion in the killing, Fadima appealed to the public to help establish the truth.

Taking strong exception to the manner in which Sikandar was found killed, the United Clubs' Organisation, Hatta Golapati has also demanded a proper enquiry so as to establish the facts and circumstances of the killing.

Meanwhile, it is reported that a departmental enquiry has been initiated into the killing of Md Sikandar.
