Attack on, two nabbed for threatening poll workers

Imphal, February 13: Even as unidentified gunmen attacked the residence of Congress candidate in Kshetrigao constituency Mohamuddin Shaha last night, two alleged members of an UG group who threatened the worker of ex Minister and Congress candidate in Sugnu K Ranjit were nabbed by the latter's security personnel, BSF and party workers at Sugnu Turel Wangrna at 2.30 pm today.

Reports said the gunmen fired three rounds at around 10 pm yesterday.

No one was injured.

One Chinese made hand grenade and a scooter have been recovered from the two youths who 'allegedly threatened the workers.

They were roughed up by the workers and are in the custody of the BSF, reports reaching here said.

The cadres have been identified as pvt Sanasam Surjit alias Basan and Hijam Milan alias Michael both residents of Suanu Turel Wangma.

The youths have confessed that they were sent by a political rival of K Ranjit.

Gunmen torched a Maruti van on election duties for Speaker and NCP candidate in Thongju AC Dr S Dhananjoy at Uchekon Jubiaj Palli under Singjamei police station at 2 am today.

The vehicle was carrying election workers when it was stopped and set on fire by the gunmen.

Dhananjoy suspected hands of political rivals.

A worker of the MSCP was caught by members of the Social, Educational, Health and Cultural Development Org while allegedly distributing money to a voter at Bishnupur ward No 1 at 5.30 this evening.

The worker is identified as L Kalyanchandra (37) of Bishnupur ward number one.

He was caught with Rs 500 while coming from a house after allegedly giving Rs 100 to an old woman.

In another incident, unidentified gunmen took away Rs 20,200 from two female workers of FPM candidate in Keisamthong, Laisom Ibomcha at around 12.30 this noon.

The women said the money was given to them by an agent of the candidate yesterday for distribution to voters.

Rs 200 each was to be distributed.

The gunmen came at around 12.30 noon before the money was distributed and forced them to hand it over to them, they added.

The gunmen told them to remain in the confines of their homes, they added.
