Campaigning comes to a grinding halt

Imphal, February 12: Campaigning for the first phase of elections to the state Assembly, due to be held on Thursday, ended at 2 pm today.

The last day of campaigning was marked by a flurry of electioneering activity, including public meetings and publicity campaign by workers of various candidates.

The last day of campaigning also saw armed attacks on the residences of at least two candidates, though no casualties were reported.

The first phase elections will cover the 40 Assembly segments in the valley districts of Imphal east, Imphal west, Thoubal and Bishnupur district.

In the meantime, official sources said the deployment of security personnel for the valley districts for Thursday's poll will be done from the respective district police stations tomorrow.

However, so far there has been no final instruction from the higher authorities to the concerned SPs and OCs regarding the strength of the security personnel to be deployed at the various polling stations.

On me other hand, for the successful holding of the elections the state police, along with central para-military forces have already taken up precautionary measures in every valley district, the sources added.
