Imphal, January 12: Following an assault attempt on MPP candidate L Jatra of Khangabok Constituency which is also the home turf of Chief Minister O Ibobi, tension is running high in the said Assembly Constituency between Congress workers and supporters of L Jatra.

On the other hand, following a strong discontentment among MPP workers concerning issuance of tickets, MPP leaders including its president L Chandramani are unable to sit in their office.

The MPP leaders are staying away from their offices as numerous party workers and sympathisers were infuriated at the non-issuance of tickets to their chosen aspiring candidates who have already initiated election campaigns.

MPP workers of Nambol and Konthoujam Constituencies today staged a dharna at MPP gate demanding MPP tickets for Maibam Bijoykumar and Samom Nabakumar respectively.

Meanwhile, tension erupted in Khangabok A/C following reported assault on supporters of L Jatra by Congress workers.

Addressing media persons at MPP office today, its general secretary L Jatra said that with the approach of elections, the position of the Chief Minister has worsened.

Moreover, after the arrest of two gunmen along with a cell phone by Thoubal district commandos on January 10, it was learnt that there was plan to attack him (Jatra), he said.

The communication between some Congress workers and a man from Athokpam asking for the remaining Rs 1.80 lakhs in addition to Rs 1.20 lakhs already delivered to assassinate Jatra was intercepted by the commandos, asserted the MPP candidate while conveying gratitude to the commando personnel.

Saying that some of his supporters suffered injuries when Congress workers attacked them including himself yesterday, Jatra noted that under the unfolding situation, the DGP should provide security coverage and escorts.
