Poll official, driver among 5 killed in MPA attack at Ukhrul district

Imphal, February 09: At least five persons, including a polling personnel, a civilian driver and three CRPF jawans were killed when cadres of UNLF�s armed wing MPA attacked a convoy at a remote area of Ukhrul district today.

Another CRPF jawan was also injured in the attack.

The polling official is identified as Ngachansa Kasomwasi (23) of Kharasom while the driver is identified as Phuritsabam Chaoba (32) of Sangaithel Mayai Leikai.

He was attached with the Sericulture Dept.

The injured CPRF jawan is identified as Rajinder Yadav of Gajipur in UP.

Though the identities of the slain CRPF men are yet to be established it is learnt that one was from Jammu and Kashmir while the other two were from Thoubal.

The CRPF convoy was returning from Kamjong sub-division along with polling material and poll officials when the clinical ambush was launched by the MPA cadres who were well positioned on the hilly terrain.

However, the injured personnel is stated to be out of danger, according to a reliable source who added that the attack took place at around 9.30 am.

The injured personnel will be brought to Imphal by a chopper tomorrow, said an official source.

The ambush site is located more than 100 kilometres from Ukhrul district headquarters in between Grihang and Ningchak villages under Kamjong sub-division.

The CRPF team is informed to have been returning from polling stations located close to the Indo-Myanmar border.

Claiming the attack, a spokesperson of the UNLF contended that more than six security personnel were slain in the ambush.

The MPA cadres also recovered two INSAS rifles, one LMG and a wireless set from the CRPF team.

However, official source informed that one polling official and a civilian driver were among five persons killed in the attack besides injury caused to another CRPF personnel.

The para-military force team belong to the A Company of CRPF�s 511 battalion and was detailed for poll duty in 43/30 Kampat, 43/31 nambisa and 43/33 Phaiko polling stations under Phungyar AC for the first phase election held yesterday.

Reports indicate that three section each of the CRPF were deployed in the three polling stations located under Chassad police station.

This police station does not have communication infrastructure like wireless set thereby hampering contact between the police station and district headquarters or Home Department headquarters.

Informed source conveyed that well armed unidentified persons used bombs and automatic weapons in the attack that completely destroyed one Maruti Gypsy leading a four vehicle convoy.

The Gypsy is said to have caught fire in the attack.

Condition of three Electronic Voting Machines brought by the security convoy is not known till late in the evening.

on receiving information of the attack, personnel of 1st Assam Rifles based in Kamjong sub-division headquarters rushed to the incident spot and under the command of its Commanding Officer launched a massive hunt for the attackers.

Another team of State police led by Ukhrul SDPO also left for the site late afternoon.

There is no report of any arrest being made in connection with the attack.

Bodies of the five deceased and an injured personnel were brought to Kamjong.
