Imphal, June 03 2009: As decided by the State Cabinet following the assassination of Prof Islamuddin on the campus of Manipur University on May 25, a police picket is set to come up inside the varsity campus within a couple of days.

Towards this end a team of police officials including the SSP of Imphal West L Kailun along with the Vice Chancellor of MU Prof C Amuba inspected the campus of the varsity and identified a site where the police picket will come up today.

Police personnel will be put on duty at the picket, said a police officer while speaking to The Sangai Express.

Significantly the new development comes in the wake of Governor Gurbachan assuring a team of Manipur University Teachers' Association that the needful will be done to open a police picket on the campus of the varsity.

Speaking further, the police officer said that a security barrack would be opened on the northern side of the Administrative Block of the university.

A combined team of State policemen and Manipur Rifles personnel will be put on duty at all the strategic locations of the university including the entry and exit points of MU.

Stating the police picket will be opened within the next few days and made operational, the police officer said that other than guarding the key offices and blocks, the security personnel will also patrol the campus.

The campus barrack will be headed by an officer, said the police officer and added that the Home Guard personnel already deployed inside the university campus will continue with their duty there.

They will not be shifted from MU, he asserted.

Efforts to contact the VC for his comments drew blank as none of his staff picked up the office phone during office hours despite repeated calls.

One receptionist who eventually picked up the phone said that the VC was out for the inspection exercise and suggested that a call be made at about 2.30 pm when he was expected be to be back at his office.

From around 2.30 pm till 4 pm, repeated calls were made to the VC's office but to no avail.

Significantly the VC and MU authority has not issued any official statement in connection with the assassination of Prof Islamuddin though the proscribed KYKL, which has claimed responsibility for the killing had levelled a series of charges against the late Professor in connection with the election of Manipur University Students' Union.

The silence of the VC had not gone down well with a number of organisations, with some, including the Manipur University Teachers' Association demanding his resignation on moral ground.

The Manipur University Students' Union has also announced that they would be launching a series of agitation against the VC and the Registrar.
