Imphal, February 03: Working president of Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, Udoy Thongam today expressed full confidence that there will be no room for the corrupt and tainted elements after the people exercise their franchise rights for the 8th Assembly election.

Participating at the Meet the Press Programme organized by All Manipur Working Journalist Union, AMWJU at Manipur Press Club, the DPP leader said that even if the party is not in a position to form the government after the hustings it would play the role of Opposition judiciously and responsibly.

He however expressed optimism that the DPP will lead the next Government.

DPP president Khaidem Mani said that the party expects to win at least 20 of the 24 seats it is contesting.

The party has fielding one women candidate and three candidates in hill assembly constituencies.

Maintaining that no single party will secure absolute majority, Mani said the issue of joining a coalition Government will be taken after due consultation with the people.

He said DPP was floated with the vision of ushering in a new Manipur and said the flames of the June 18 uprising will guide the agenda of the party.

Other than the support extended by the CPI (M) in eight Assembly constituencies, DPP has not entered into alliance with any other political parties, Mani said.

At the moment the party is yet to decide with which party to go along after the election.

DPP will strike up ties with other political parties under common major issues.

However the party should not have any tainted elements, he added.

General Secretary and spokesman of the party LC Somorendro said a distinct change in the electoral behavior of the electorates is visible this time.

Excesses associations with previous elections have thankfully gone down, he noted.

He also lauded the efforts of voluntary organizations, local clubs and meira paibis for keeping a sharp look out against any excesses during the electioneering.

If this trend continues then it augurs well for the people as whole, he observed.
