Two UGs slain, arms recovered

Imphal, January 03 2008: In two separate incidents of encounter that reportedly took place in different parts of Imphal East district today morning, security forces gunned down two underground activists.

According to police report, the first encounter took place with a combined force of Imphal East Police Commandos, personnel of 32 Assam Rifles and 155 BSF at Nongpok Sanjenbam Kambongput under Lamlai Police Station at around 4.45 am today.

In the encounter, one suspected cadre of the proscribed KCP (MC) who was a bail out cadre of the proscribed RPF/PLA was shot dead.

One pistol loaded with three bullets, one Chinese-made hand grenade and two demand letters of KCP (MC) have been recovered from possession of the slain KCP (MC) cadre and the body picked up and kept at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.

On the other hand, contradicting the police claim, family members who came to identity the body as that of one Yengkhom Surjit alias Thembung (28) s/o Iboton of Sandrok Makha Leikai asserted that he had been picked up by some uniformed personnel suspected to be Police Commandos from near Standard College, Kongba at around 3.30 pm yesterday.

According to the family members, Surjit was an activist of the proscribed PLA some seven years back.

But has retired and staying at home since then.

He left behind his wife and two children, a boy and a girl.

His body is still lying at the mortuary of RIMS.

In the second encounter which took place at Yairipok Yambem Iroilok under Yairipok Police station at around 11 am today, Thoubal Police Commandos and Army personnel shot dead a PLA cadre.

According to a statement issued by SP of Thoubal District Clay Khongsai in connection with the incident, at around 11 am today, acting on specific information regarding movement of suspected PLA cadres in and around Andro Khunou, Sanapat and Haraorou area, Thoubal Police Commandos alongwith Army personnel moved into Haraorou area for conducting counter-insurgency operations.

While the combined force was moving towards the said location at about 12.30 pm, suspected PLA cadres fired upon the combined team from Haraorou-Iroilok.

Thus an encounter ensued for about 15 minutes.

After the encounter, one suspected UG was found shot dead at the site while the other militants managed to escape taking cover of the thick forest and hilly terrain.

On further inspection of the encounter site, one AK-56 Rifle, one magazine with seven live rounds of AK ammunition, 11 fired cases of AK ammunition, one mis-fired shell of Lathode bomb and one fired case of lathode bomb were recovered, the SP conveyed.

The body has been picked up and deposited at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.

Though the police have not been able to ascertain the identity of the slain person, according to information received by the press, he is likely to be one Kadamba of Uchiwa Santhel.

Meanwhile, the identity of the person who was reportedly shot dead by a combined force of Bishnupur Police Commandos and personnel of 7 Assam Rifles during a encounter at Ungamenpat under Kumbi Police Station of Bishnupur district yesterday afternoon has been established today as a 14-year old PREPAK cadre.

He was Chanambam Kokngang alias Krishna alias Killa s/o Juge of Mayang Imphal Chabung Company Mayai Leikai.

He studied till class V and left home to join PREPAK in May 2008, family members informed.

The identities of another two UG suspects who were shot dead by Bishnupur Police Commandos during a reported encounter at Potsangbam Maning Okhalok in the morning yesterday have not yet been able to establish and their bodies still lying at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.
