Jagat assures MUTA to calm MU

Imphal, May 31 2009: The Governor Gurbachan Jagat has reportedly assured a Manipur University Teachers' Association (MUTA) delegation to do the needful for restoration of conducive academic environment in the manipur University.

A team of MUTA functionaries who called on the Governor at the raj Bhavan on May 30 morning to air their grievances and disruption caused to the varsity's tranquillity in the aftermath of the assassination of Prof Md Islamuddin of Economics Department was assured by Gurbachan Jagat on the establishment of a police picket inside MU campus.

MUTA president A Ranjit said the delegation confided to the Governor regarding anxiety and sense of insecurity felt by the teaching faculty after the day light killing of the former Dean of Students' Welfare by activists of the outlawed KYKL on May 25 .

The Governor, who is informed to have already intimated to officials concerned for enhancing security measures in MU campus, told the MUTA team that setting up police picket and police patrolling are some of the suggestions mooted by the State Govt.Significantly, MUTA members also impressed upon the Governor that the University's Vice Chancellor Prof C Amuba should step down on moral ground 'for his ineptness in making the campus a secured zone', disclosed Ranjit.

Meanwhile, an informed source said representatives of the State Government along with deans and Heads of Department of MU are likely to hold a joint emergency meeting tomorrow to discuss the situation arising out of the killing of Prof Md Islamuddin.

among others, the meeting is certain to focus on establishment of the police picket, the source added.

On the other hand, a senior police officer said security measures have been reviewed and tightened in the varsity through the deployment of three mobile teams of police commandos.

moreover 13 persons, including student activists have been rounded up as a part of the ongoing investigation into the gunning down of the Professor, the police official added.
