Imphal, May 26 2009: The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has expressed annoyance over the act of some government forces who searched for students leaders in the wake of the killing of Prof Islamuddin yesterday at MU campus by some gunmen.

A statement of the AMSU signed by its information and publicity secretary L Ranendra strongly denounced the action of Manipur police who not only assaulted the brother of the AMSU vice-president, Khagembam Khaba Meitei yesterday on the pretext of searching the VP, but also took possession of the mobile phone of the student leader and using scathing language.

Condemning the detention of some students from the MU hostel and the members of AMSU Bishnupur district committee by the government forces, the AMSU statement also demanded the unconditional release of the students who have been detained.

The AMSU statement also cautions that the hunt for students' leaders amidst the agony would seem like inviting more tension while warning to launch intense agitation if the government fails to release the detained students and stop searching for students' leaders.

The AMSU also demanded the government to book the killers of Prof Islamuddin in the earliest and give befitting punishment while adding that detaining innocent students will bring no solution.

Meanwhile, miffed at the conduct of the government in detaining students without any rhyme or reason, the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) categorically asked the agenda behind the detention of students' leaders and the hunt for them at their respective houses.

Ratan Kumar, the general secretary of DESAM stated that the act is but to suppress the students' community while demanding immediate end on searching for the students' leaders and to release the detained students unconditionally.

DESAM is of the opinion that the state will be in total mess if the state government doesn't retract its steps in arresting students, the statement noted.

The government should come out clear as to why it has been arresting and trying to arrest students' leaders, the statement adjures.

It further stated that DESAM is ready to confront with various students' organisations and the public if the government fails to withdraw its steps in trying to arrest students' leaders and free the detained students for which the whole responsibilities will be rested on the government.
