Imphal, August 24 2009: Some suspected Muslim militants opened fire at a Churachandpur-bound passenger bus from Imphal last evening at about 6.30 pm near Phoubakchao Ekhai Bazar under Moirang police station.

The militants numbering about three or four forcibly stopped the bus and shot at the tyres in the front and rear puncturing them.

Police said, the militants ordered the passengers out of the bus and opened fire at the bus near the driver's cabin.

They shot at the windshields.

They also attempted to burn the bus.

However, with the intervention of the locals and passengers, the bus was spared from being reduced to cinders.

The ill-fated bus belongs to one Huiyam Biren of Tronglaobi Makha Leikai.

Police have registered a case with regard to the incident.
