Imphal, March 24 2009: Gunmen suspected to be underground activists on Tuesday shot to injure two persons, a pradhan in Bishnupur district and the brother in-law of the IMC chairperson M Ranisana in separate incidents.

The pradhan was shot at to injure for allegedly refusing to pay percentage from developmental funds released to the gram panchayat while the brother in-law of the IMC chairperson who is an advocate was shot at by two miscreants who asked the chairperson to night at around 8 pm at Uripok Achom Leikai under Lamphel police station.

Reports said the pradhan of the Nachou Gram Panchayat Nongmaithem Ranjit (42) son of Abiram of Nachou Mamang Leikai who is also the general secretary of the Bishnupur CD block was shot at to injure at the right calf after the miscreants abducted him from his home today at around 8.30 am.

According to local report, an unidentified person called on with the pradhan who was inspecting a pond dug by gram panchayat at Nachou this morning with three members of the GP and asked him why he did not pay out the percentage of the fund awarded under the 12th finance commission, RJSY, AAY etc.

After then the unidentified man go together with Ranjit upto Nachou Mayai Leikai on foot and held talks on the matter.

After then he was asked to stand and shot at once at right calf.

Before shooting, the three accompanied the pradhan requested the gunman not to shoot him and struggle with him.

But, he somehow fired the gun.

He was immediately rushed to the district hospital.

His condition was stated to be out of danger.

Decrying the act of the unidentified gunman, villagers of the Nachou carried out a sit-in protest commencing from 10.30 am and went on till 3 pm.

Many slogans in protest against the shooting were also displayed at the spot.

The shooting to injure of the advocate and brother in-law of the IMC chairperson, M Ranisana took place at around 8 pm at the house of the chairperson at Uripok Achom Leikai.

He was identified as Meinam Tombi son of late Kaminibabu.

He is a practicing lawyer.

Two miscreants intruded into the house first asked for the chairperson who was not at home to Tombi.

When he said, she is not at home the miscreants took out a gun and shot at him.

They were seemed to be in drunkard state.
