Lawyers demand probe in AG shooting incident

New Delhi, March 09, 2010: The All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) has demanded to book the culprit according to law involved in the shooting of the Advocate General and also to institute an enquiry by the sitting Judge of the Gauhati High Court, Imphal or by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

It was stated in a memorandum which was submitted to the governor of Manipur,Gurbachan Jagat on Tuesday.

The memorandum was submitted by a team of six members of AMBA led by Y.Priyokumar Singh, general secretary AMBA and the other members included the joint secretaries of the association namely, Th.Ashok Kumar, Koijam Brojen, Longjam Indira Devi and the two executive members, S.Olendro, L.Nutankumar.

The memorandum also stated that the deadly bullet injury to the learned Advocate General is being taken seriously by AMBA.

The Advocate General is a representative of the state in North East Bar Council and therefore he undertakes an important role in taking crucial decision of the development of the state, AMBA memo said.

The AMBA also criticized the state government of not lodging any FIR regarding the incident.

It is worth mentioning that N.Koteshwor, the Advocate General of Manipur was hit by a bullet on Saturday night while returning from Ukhrul after attending a function with Works minister K.Ranjit and Tribal Development minister D.D Thaisi sharing the same vehicle.

He was hit by a bullet from a licensed gun of one of the Advocate General's co-passenger had hit the former.

Meanwhile, the High Court Bar Association, Manipur cautioned the government to book the culprit involved in the shooting of advocate general by March 12. They also demanded to lodge FIR and an enquiry of the shootout by the CBI.

Failure to the demands would compel them to take up court proceedings.

It was stated in a press conference held Tuesday at the Gauhati High Court, North AOC .

N Jotendro Singh informed that they would cease to work till March 12 so as to intensify their agitation.

The High Court Bar Association, Manipur staged a sit-in-protest on Tuesday at North AOC, Imphal.

They were demanding to book the culprit and an FIR be lodged and also demanded to transfer the case to the CBI for proper investigation.

An emergency meeting was convened on Monday by the High Court Bar Association, Manipur where the members had resolved that FIR be lodged and transfer the case to the CBI for appropriate enquiry.

The AMBA and Gauhati High Court Bar Association will be organizing a joint rally on Wednesday,11am starting from Gauhati High Court complex, Imphal North AOC to at Cheirap Court, Uripok, Imphal.
