Slain youth turns out to be student

Kohima, March 04 2009: Security forces today killed a student of Standard-VII in what they said in encounter at Phoubakchao Heibong Yangbi.

The killed student was later identified as one Phisubam Ajad (12) son of Md Wahid Ali of Phoubakchao Heibong Yangbi.

He was a student of Standard-VII in the Phoubakchao, according to local report.

An indefinite blockade along the Mayai Lambi road commencing from 6 am tomorrow has been called in protest against the killing after the locals formed a joint action committee.

A combined force of Thoubal district police commandos and 21 Assam Rifles gunned down the student today at around 12.30 pm.

Police said he was killed when a youth fired upon the combined force entering to the area for counter insurgency operation base on a tip-off.

When the combined team reached there, the youth fired upon them in a bid to escape.

He was killed when the force retaliated and recovered a 9 mm pistol loaded with three live rounds.

However, eyewitness accounts at the spot said that Azad was picked up by the security forces coming into three Gypsy vehicles from his home before killing at around 11.45 am.

At that time, the father of slain Azad was seating reading a newspaper at the front courtyard of the house with one of his local friends.

The security personnel before leaving the house also scolded his father of not knowing his son joining an underground outfit and forced him to stay inside home and carry away Azad by under gun point.

Members of the neighbouring houses were also forced to stay inside their houses, locals said.

Later, after forcing him to move with them at gun point 100 meter away from his home, three commando personnel shot him dead, the locals reported.

Decrying the killing, a public meeting was held at Phoubakchao High School ground and resolved to press the government to find out the personnel involved in the murder of Azad and award of befitting punishment among others.

Other resolutions of the meeting were to demand the state government for construction of a library in memory of the student AZAD in the school where he studied, payment of Rs 5 lakhs as compensation to the bereaved family and to call indefinite bandh along the Mayai Lambi till their demands are meet by the government.

Anguish people also stormed the Mayang Imphal police station.

Later, police allowed the JAC members to submit a memorandum to the chief minister in-charge.
