Imphal, July 22 2009: Are pigs rebels, asked opposition MLA O Joy in the Manipur Legislative Assembly today while drawing the attention of the Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi, who also holds the portfolio of Home Minister on the report of shooting and killing domestic animals like pigs by the security personnel during the counter insurgency operation conducted at Chingjao village of Pumlenpat in Thoubal district on June 20 last.

However, Chief Minister O Ibobi who is also looking after the home portfolio said that there were no reports of setting ablaze of dwelling house of the villagers.

No complaints of causing damage to the properties so far come up.

The opposition member drew the attention of the home minister on the reported burning down of as many as 15 huts and killing of many pigs and eaten up by the security forces during the June 20 counter insurgency operation to flush out insurgents taking shelter in the Chingjao village having a population less than 200 heads.

The operation was launched by a strong combined force comprising police commando teams from Imphal west, Imphal east and Thoubal and troops of 21 Assam Rifles and 12 Maratha Light infantry at the isolated village in the lake area of Pumlenpat.

Opposition MLA, O Joy drew the attention of the state home minister in the House today on the excess of the security personnel during the operation stating that the security personnel apart from burning down the huts use by the villagers in fishing caused to their properties severely.

He alleged the security personnel of killing as many as seven pigs rear by a old aged widow of Chingjao village and eaten up during the operation apart from burning down more than 15 huts.

He also said that as per the report published in the local dailies, security forces recovered anything related with the underground elements and security forces burnt down the huts on suspect of using as shelter by the undergrounds.

It will not be right one to remain silent if such excessive continue repeatedly, Joy observed.

"Why security forces killing the domestic animals and fowls, Are the animals militant, Why they killed the pigs by shooting with guns, Are the pigs militant," Joy who wanted to know what step has the government taken to compensate the loss properties of the villagers.

Giving reply to the call attention motion, chief minister, O Ibobi Singh who is also looking after the home portfolio said that government has so far no report of causing damages to the properties of the villagers.

Villagers are neither lodged complaint with the police or other authority concerns regarding the excess that said to be meted out to the villagers.

But he assured the house that he will look into the matter and do the needful to compensate the loss and not to repeat the incident.

However, he added that during the operation many incriminating documents related with the proscribed outfits, KYKL and PLA seized from the huts that burnt down by the security forces.

It has been burnt down as it were the shelter points of the militants.
