Manipur bandh begins

Imphal, October 23 2009: A 24-hour Manipur bandh has been called starting from the midnight of Friday by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the brutal murder of Dr H Binodkumar owing to the failure of the government to nab the culprits involved in the killing of the doctor.

The JAC had set a deadline till Friday 5 pm to nab the murderer of H Binodkumar who was brutally murdered on Thursday when he had gone for collecting his pension from United Commercial (UCO) bank.

His lifeless body was recovered from a paddy field under Heingang police station, Imphal.

Meanwhile, the slain doctor's dead body was accepted by the JAC from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) mortuary following a meeting with the chief minister on late Friday evening.

The JAC submitted a memorandum to the chief minister in the meeting.

The chief minister also informed the JAC that police has already started hunting for the culprits and also assured the JAC to give the response by Saturday 2 pm.

The memorandum listed the demands to book the culprits by Friday 5 pm and award with befitting punishment.

The incident had however, occurred for "a few amount of money", therefore the chief minister should assure the public of Manipur that such incidents do not occur in future, stated the memorandum.

Meanwhile, a section of National Highway-39 from Singjamei to Yaiskul was blocked by the JAC on Thursday demanding to nab the murderers of the H.Binodkumar.

While staging sit-in protest in Yaiskul, Imphal several vehicles were stranded and damaged in the roads leading toYaiskul.

However, the police managed to control the mob and the vehicles were released by making the traffic one way.
