Imphal, June 21 2009: The Joint Action Committee formed against the killing of Prof Islamuddin of Manipur University has called a 24-hour statewide general strike beginning from 6am of June 22 .

Announcing this in a statement, president of the JAC, Liyakut Ali alleged the government of failing to materialise the agreement that has been reached with the JAC while also accusing the government of trying to shield the culprits involved in the killing of Prof Islamuddin.

Taking strong exception against the failure of the government in booking the culprits even after handing the case to the CBI following a cabinet decision, the JAC is compelled to impose a 24-hour statewide general strike on June 22, the JAC statement conveys.

Accordingly, the strike will begin at 6am of June 22 and will end at 6am of June 23 .

Pointing out that the government was able to trace the killers of contractor Krishnadas, who was killed on June 12, within few days, the JAC statement further observed that the JAC is bound to resort to take up the agitation as the government will never be able to book and punish the culprits involved in the killing of Prof Islamuddin even as a jawan of IRB surrendered to the government.

It further stated that medical, water supply, electricity, and religious matters will be exempted from the purview of the strike while also appealing the civil society organisations of the state to extend cooperation.
