Governor visits AG at Shija Lawyers take out protest procession

Imphal, March 10, 2010: Manipur Governor, Gurbachan Jagat Wednesday paid a visit to the wounded state Advocate General, N Koteshwor at the Shija Hospital but refused to comment on the government inaction to the demand of the lawyers who have been abstaining from court works for the last three days demanding booking of the cabinet minister, who shot and injured the Advocate General on March 6. Agitating lawyers in their hundreds, as part of their protest, took out a silent march on the streets of Imphal today insisting on immediate fulfillment of their demands by the government.

Governor Gurbachan Jagat today went to the Shija Hospital at about 11 am to enquire about the health condition of the wounded Advocate General, N Koteshwor whose condition is said to be improving steadily.

When asked what action is going to be taken by the government with regard to the incident, the Governor said, "for the time being he can't say anything" but indicated that he would look into the matter.

He also said that he is examining into the representations submitted by the lawyers' bodies on what action could be taken up from his side.

Meanwhile, around 300 lawyers working in different lower and high courts today marched a silent pressurizing the state government to translate into action to their demands among which includes handing over of the case to CBI or any other Central investigative agency.

The rally was started from High Court complex, North AOC and marched upto Cheirap Court,Uripok where a joint meeting of the All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) and the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) held to discuss on future course of action to their agitation.

The meeting presided over senior advocate L Shyamkishore, president of the HCBA resolved to form a joint monitoring committee to closely monitor the action taken report of the government towards their demands and into the case of the shooting of the AG.

Meanwhile, Lamlai police station of Imphal east district where Nongada, the place of shooting to injure of the AG while travelling with the two ministers has registered a case under section 307 of IPC of the PS, an official confirmed Wednesday.

The police also formally seized the licensed gun of the minister involved in the case.

The gun belongs to Tribal Development Minister DD Thaisii but it is yet to be cleared who among the two ministers, DD Thaisii or works minister K Ranjit used the gun on that day as they were together in the same car allotted to the works minister.

The vehicle is yet to be seized but likely to seized along with the projectile taken out from the AG's body after operation on the next day of the incident.
