Eight released on bail; DESAM calls off bandh

Imphal, June 02 2009: Five of the 13 volunteers of student bodies arrested in connection with the murder of MU professor charged of being activists of the underground outfits have been detained under NSA while the rest were released on bail today.

Court released the rest eight on bail with PR bond with surety amount of Rs 30,000 each.

Former president of the Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) Phijam Dinesh, a research scholar in English and present education affairs secretary of the Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Arambam Thoithoi were among the five students who have been detained under NSA by orders issued by Imphal west district magistrate.

Police charged the former president, Phijam Dinesh, currently doing research in English at Manipur University and the education secretary of DESAM, Thoithoi as activists of the proscribed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), proscribed outfit owning the murder of the former dean of students welfare, prof.Dr Islamuddin on May 25 .

Two more students from DESAM, Thoudam Shyam and Ksh Kiran, who were among the five detained under NSA also charged of being activists of DESAM while the rest one, Thangjam LanKishore, a volunteer of the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) is charging of being UNLF.

The eight student volunteers belonging to DESAM, AMSU and MSF who have been rounded up by the police in wake of sensitive murder of the professor Md Islamuddin have been released on bailed with PR bond of Rs 30,000 and an equal amount as surety bond.

DESAM's volunteers who have been released on bail were Laishram Bijen, Khongram Ranbir, Ksh Ranjan and Laishram Joyprakash while that of AMSU were N dinesh Sairem Robindro, Wahengbam Binoy and that of MSF was RK Suresh.

They were produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate, Imphal by the police with tight security today at around 2.10 pm.

Police produced them with a prayer of 15 days further remand to eight of them while stating that five of them have been detained under NSA.

Before, they were produced to the court, an order of the Imphal west district magistrate A Ibomcha detained them under section 3(2) of the NSA, 1980 till further order citing that the five arrestees are likely to get bail from the criminal court.

In brief talk to media person while he was produced to the court, DESAM education affairs secretary Thoithoi alleged that they were forced to sign in a blank paper by the police while they are in the judicial custody.

He further said that he was even carried to Cheiraoching and interrogated there by the police.

They also threatened him falling the misfortune befell on MAFYF president Kangelipal.

They also did various deeds which were not supposed to do.

Police further charged them of inspecting the quality control of the construction of schools buildings with the backing of the KYKL apart from harassing mentally as well as physically.

Advocate Yumnam Devadutta speaking at the court complex said that police could not produce hard evidence to proof the charges level against the detained students.

So they were released on bail with surety amount.

He also said that any of the Central or state government authorities has so far declared AMSU and DESAM as outlaw organizations.

As there were no appropriate prima facie evidence to the police charge, ACJM released them on bail, he added.

No application for obtaining bail applied from the counsel side of the detained students for the five NSA detenue but for the eight who were not detained under NSA, the counsels applied bail application giving arguments that the charges level against them all baseless.

Professor, Md Islamuddin who was the former dean of student welfare and resigned when controversy arose in the elections to the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) was killed by four miscreants inside the MU campus, Canchipur, Imphal in the board daylight on May 25 .

In connection with the murder case which KYKL owned on the next of murder with various charges against the professor, police has also detained an IRB man who was on duty at the MU main entrance gate but found absent.

DESAM has announced that it has decided to defer the proposed 120 hour general strike and declaration of emergency for sometime in comply with the appealed from various civil society organizations and considering the grievances of the people living with day to day earning.

In a statement signed by secretary publicity and propaganda, DESAM head office dispatched to the media today stated that even though DESAM withdrawn from its determination to call general strike and emergency in the state in the interest of the public, the body will continue its various forms of agitations till the demand for unconditional release of the detained student volunteers is achieved with the support of the people.

However, the body warned that if the government failed to fulfill its demand despite demand with various forms of agitations, they will compel to impose the general strike at any time if government taking advantage of the relaxation from general strike continue to harass the student volunteers alleging them of being underground activists and failed to freed them form NSA detention.

Government is apart from committing in killing innocent people in the manner whatever they like, also trying to abolish the students bodies.

In the effort to check government excessive and atrocities toward the people, DESAM called solidarity from the civil organizations and meira paibis.
