Imphal, January 17 2010: Troops of 12 Assam Rifles killed two suspected UNLF cadres in an alleged encounter this afternoon at Khongkhan village under Kamjong sub-division of Ukhrul district even as a handgrenade hurled by unknown miscreants exploded at the house of a Zilla Parishad Member in Imphal East district tonight.

Reports received here said that two suspected UNLF cadres were gunned down at about half past noon near Khongkhan (Kamjong sub-division) on Kamjong-Muivai Lup road today, a statement of the PRO, IGAR(S) informed.

One G-3 rifle with a magazine loaded with eight live rounds and one .303 rifle with a magazine loaded with 15 live rounds and one Japanese made hand-held radio set were recovered from the two slain suspects, the statement added.

The dead bodies have been brought to Imphal and kept at RIMS morgue for official identification today, the reports added.

Troops of 31 AR also apprehended one KCP(MC) activist identified as Bobol @ Safiq Ur Rehman (21), son of Azijur Rehman of Sora, Thoubal district during an operation at Pangal Basti of Chandel district.

The activist, along with Rs 1400 in cash and a register containing suspicious mobile numbers recovered from him, had been handed over to Imphal Police Station, the statement further informed.

On the other hand, a bomb hurled by suspected underground activists, exploded at the house of a Member of Zilla Parishad, Mumtaz Begum of Urup Arapti in Imphal East district under Irilbung Police Station at about 6.30 pm today.

No casualty was reported in the blast that took place at the courtyard of the ZP Member.

It is believed that the bomb attack could have been related with extortion demand.
