Imphal, November 12 2008: SOME UNIDENTIFIED persons armed with sophisticated weapons launched an attack upon the 32 Assam Rifles post located just north and west of the Lilong Police Station around 8.45 tonight.

The assailants fired at least five rounds of lathod bombs at the AR post, reports received from Lilong police said.

According to police personnel posted at the Lilong PS, they first heard the loud sound of explosion, as of a bomb blast, from the campus of the AR post which is located just next to the building of the police station.

Immediately, all police personnel including the sentries, with weapons in their hands, went out and tried to find the source of the sound of explosion.

But, next moment series of explosions, three to be precise, occurred one after another at the campus of the AR post.

As they heard, there were at least five explosions of lathod bombs.

Then the police personnel realised that it was an attack using lathod bombs by underground insurgents.

Fearing that the lathod bombs could land at the police station's campus as well, all the police personnel took positions inside the campus.

However, not a single lathod bomb landed on the police station's side.

The AR personnel also opened fire from their automatic rifles and LMGs which lasted for a few minutes.

Because of that, the police personnel dared not enter the AR campus to enquire if there were any casualty.

It was only after the sound of explosions and firings had died down that the police personnel could contact the commander and other personnel of the AR post.

On enquiry, the AR personnel reported to the police that there was no casualty on the side of the AR personnel.

Within minutes after the attack, large re-inforcements of AR and Manipur police commandos rushed to the spot.

The AR personnel of the post belong to 'A' Coy of 32 AR and there are about 100 of them at the post.

It is not known which insurgent group carried out the attack.

No group has made any claim so far.
