One IM cadre killed in fierce encounter

Imphal, August 12 2009: A cadre of NSCN (IM) was reported to have been killed in a fierce encounter with Assam Rifles personnel this morning which began around 7.20 in Ukhrul district.

According to a report, the incident occurred at a hillock near Sorde village under Phungyar Police Station in Ukhrul district.

The battle was said to have lasted for around three hours.

Troops of 23 AR were on Road Opening Petrol (ROP) and Area Domination duty on the inter-village roads in the area this morning when they come across around 35 heavily armed cadres in combat dress, the report said.

Fearing the well armed cadres would attack them, the AR personnel on ROP and Area Domination Duty resorted to open fire towards the armed cadres, the report said.

A fierce gun battle ensued when the suspected NSCN (IM) cadres retaliated to the fire.

The encounter resulted in the disappearance of five IM cadres.

The AR personnel were reported to have shelled out Rocket launcher shells.

One dead body along with an AK Rifle was said to be recovered from the spot.

No casualty has been suffered by the AR personnel, the report said.

Meanwhile, source close to the NSCN (IM) said the NSCN (IM) cadres were moving with villagers under the command of 'Major' Raishen for a work when they come under attack from the AR personnel.

Four of the IM cadres including 'Major' Raishen were untraceable.

The source also ruled the possibility of four/five casualties from the AR side.

However, no official report has been received till late tonight.

At the same time, a police team led by an SDPO had moved in to the area today.
