Four killed, JCO hurt in separate encounters

Imphal, March 10 2009: At least four cadres of underground outfits were killed and a Junior Commission Officer of Assam Rifles sustained injury in different counter insurgency related incidents that occurred in different part of the state today.

The JCO of the Assam Rifles sustained injury in a gunfight between the troops of 36 Assam Rifles and suspected cadres of Kuki National Front (President) at Hayangching about 7 km west of Kangpokpi police station around 1.40 pm.

One militant was killed in the encounter, police said.

The dead body of the militant along with an M-16 rifle was recovered by the troops in the follow up search operation in the area after the firing had ceased.

The injured JCO identified as Rana was immediately rushed to Leimakhong Army Hospital and given medical treatment, a source said.

In Chandel district also, troops of 29 Assam Rifles gunned down a suspected militant allegedly in an encounter at Maringthel village located along the international border with Myanmar.

The suspect was killed in an encounter this morning around 7.45 am and Assam Rifles recovered one M-22 rifle along with two magazines and 60 rounds of live ammunition.

The dead body has been handed over to Tengnoupal police station.

Police deposited the dead body at RIMS morgue for official identification.

Two suspected UNLF cadres were also gunned down at Mayang Imphal Yangbi 9 km west of Mayang Imphal police station at around 9.30 am by a combined force of Imphal west police commandos and troops of 12 Martha Light Infantry.

Police said the two suspects were killed in an encounter with a combined force of Imphal west police commandos and troops of 12 Maratha Light Infantry.

They recovered a country made carbine with a magazine loaded with three live rounds and a 9 mm pistol from the slain suspects.

They were later identified as Haorokcham Sanamahi alias Jacky (21) son of H Kumar of Awang Khunou Mamang Leikai and Athokpam Nanao alias Pakpa (21) son of A Ibocha of Ethai Mayai Leikai.

Families of the slain men who turned up at RIMS morgue established their identities this afternoon.

Family members while identifying the dead bodies alleged that they were picked up by the combined force from Sekmaijin Bazar today morning at around 7.30 am along with another person and later gunned down.

They left home some 10 years back and failed to return back home since then.
