Two bodies taken, another disposed

Imphal, March 30 2009: Along with identification, the bodies of two UG suspects who were killed by security forces in separate incidents of encounters have been taken by their respective families although the body of another person who was found shot dead by unidentified gunmen has been handed over to the Imphal Municipality for disposal as unclaimed body as it could not be identified.

The UG suspect killed by Imphal East Police Commandos during encounter near Forensic Science Laboratory at Pangei yesterday has been identified as Khumanlambam Tomba (23) s/o Ibochou of Khongman Zone-III.

According to family members who have taken the body after post-mortem at RIMS Hospital today, Tomba was an innocent construction worker and he had gone out from home on March 27 to visit one of his aunties at Pangei.

On the other hand, the body of Thoudem Shantikumar who was killed by a combined force of Imphal West Police Commandos and personnel of 16 Assam Rifles during a reported encounter at Tairenpokpi on March 24 afternoon has also been taken by his family members after postmortem at RIMS today.

Though the police and even the Chief Minister himself have claimed that Shantikumar was a KYKL cadre, the family members and the local people have asserted that he was an innocent person.

Along with formation of a Joint Action Committee, agitations have also been launched in protest against the killing.

Meanwhile, the body of an unidentified man who appeared to a non-local migrant worker and was found shot dead by unknown gunmen near Sekmaijin Balika Primary School under Mayang Imphal Police Station in the morning of March 22 has been handed over to the Imphal Municipality for disposal as unclaimed body after post-mortem today as the identity of the slain could not be established.
