Killing of constable: Two apprehended

Imphal, February 22, 2010: Two individuals including a personnel of Manipur Rifles have been apprehended by police in connection with the killing of Constable Thomas Kamei.

Thomas L Kamei (25) s/o late Kadunadi of Langol Laimanai Ramgailong was killed in a brawl at North AOC involving groups of police men at about 8.30 last night.

One Sub-Inspector on probation Sagolsem Suresh of Naoremthong was also involved in the fight.

Of several individuals pulled up or summoned by Imphal West District Police in connection with the killing, two individuals have been arrested, said an official source.

The arrested persons have been identified as Dironbi Rongmei (28) s/o Punsijao of Langthabal Chingthak Kabui Khul and Thangboi Singson (32) s/o late Seikhomang of New Lambulane.

Dirongbi Rongmei is a personnel of 7th Bn Manipur Rifles and posted at an official quarter of an MLA staying at Imphal.

Thangboi is personal driver of senior Minister.

The duo were produced before CJM Imphal today who remanded them to police custody till February 26. On the other hand, a public meeting was held at Ramgailong today in connection with the killing of Thomas where a joint action committee was constituted.

The JAC has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister containing several demands.

The JAC demanded enquiry into the killing by a police officer not below the rank of DSP, provision of suitable Government job to the next of kin of the deceased as well as other forms of assistance and release of three youngsters arrested from Ramgailong.

According to the JAC, PG Robert (25), Saumthaorei Gonmei (26) and Samson Phaomei (30), all belonging to Ramgailong are being detained by police in connection with the killing.

All three of them were friends of Thomas.

They had reportedly gone to attend a Catholic convention yesterday.

They might have come across Thomas and went together.

There is no possibility of the trio's involvement in the killing of Thomas, the JAC maintained.

So far, police have not said anything whether the three of them were involved in the killing or not, the JAC conveyed.

By the sideline of a protest demonstration stage against the killing, one local women leader said the corpse of Thomas would not be claimed until the demands of the JAC are put into action.

Rather, different types of agitation would be launched, she said.

Thomas is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Thomas' elder brother Simon said that the incident should be investigated without any partiality and justice delivered.

The corpse of Thomas is still lying at the RIMS mortuary.
