Imphal, December 13 2009: A suspected underground activist was allegedly killed in an encounter by a combined force near Sadu Chiru waterfalls under Nambol Police Station in Bishnupur district around 5.05 pm today.

According to police, two AK rifles, one lethod gun, one wireless set, some live rounds and several lethod bombs were recovered from the spot.

The dead body of the underground activist has been picked up from there and kept at RIMS morgue for identification.

On receiving a reliable information that some cadres of KCP-MC were loitering around Sadu Chiru waterfalls, troops of 6/8 GR stationed at Khwairakpam Pump House and at team of Bishnupur district police commandos rushed there to launch a search operation, police said.

As the combined force got there, some armed UGs laid an ambush from the roadsides on the security force.

The combined force immediately retaliated, and a shootout ensued.

The gun fight lasted about 20 minutes, police said adding that when there was no further firing from the side of the UGs, the security personnel launched a search operation, and found the dead body of an UG activist.

On further search around the place, police found the arms and ammunitions.

Police also found some blood stains on the ground giving suspicion that some other UGs also might have been injured in the gunfight.

Police suspect that the dead UG cadre could have been a member of KCP-MC.

However, his identification is yet to be established.

There was no casualty on the side of the combined force.

In another incident, one Shrimayum Ibochoubi Sharma (70) sustained serious injuries when a handgrenade lobbed by some unknown persons exploded at his house at Yourbung under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East district at about 5.30 pm today.

The injured man has been evacuated at JN Hospital for treatment from where he has been refered to RIMS Hospital at Lamphel.

His condition is stated to be serious.

Splinters of the grenade hit his abdomen and other parts of the body.

He is an ex employee of Public Works Department, Government of Manipur.

His wife Shrimayum Ongbi Mani (55) is reported to be running a mini Anganwadi Centre, claimed to be under the Central government, at Lamlong bazar.

This is the second time of attack by unknown armed persons on their house.

Earlier there had been an attack of gun fire at their house sometime back.
