General strike affects lives in state

Imphal, July 09 2009: Life was partially paralyzed in the state today due to the 24- hour general strike called by the JAC against the killing of a special contractor, Krishnadas.

The strike severely affected in Thoubal district, reports said.

The general strike commenced from 5 am today and will conclude at 5 am tomorrow (July 10).It has been called expressing dissatisfaction in the police investigation into the case by not arresting the main culprits behind the murder of the special contractor Y Krishnadas on June 12 last.

Krishnadas was killed after abducted from his wife's parental home in Imphal even after the abductors taken Rs 25 lakh from the family as ransom for his safe release.

Even though, education and emergency services exempted from the purview of the bandh, most of the schools for the day.

The general severely affected normal life in Thoubal district where the contractor hailed from.

Streets in the districts wore deserted as no vehicle were on the roads apart from shops, business establishments, government offices and private undertakings remained closed owing to the strike.

Strike supporters also took to the street and blocked the road by burning debris and piling up logs on the roads.

Police dispersed them to resume normal traffic but traffic could not be returned to normalcy for the day, reports said.

In Imphal, most of the shops, business establishments, schools were closed and passenger vehicles were also off the roads.

But private vehicles plied on the road as usual.

No passenger buses from other district arrived Imphal for the day.

But the strike did not affect to the normal interstate services.
