Two BSF personnel killed, one hurt

Imphal, January 24 2009: AT LEAST two personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) were killed while another was injured in an ambush near their camp in Bishnupur district by one cadre of Manipur People's Army (MPA), the army of United National Liberation Front (UNLF) this evening.

The attack comes just two days before the Republic Day celebration even as security is being tightened up in Imphal area.

The Manipur People's Army (MPA), an armed wing of the UNLF has claimed responsibility for the ambush at BSF personnel.

According to police sources, the incident occurred around 5.30 pm today at a small market near Ethai Barrage about 4 kms east of Kumbi Police Station.

The sources said three personnel of 193 battalion BSF post located at Ethai Barrage went to the small market to purchase some vegetables.

As they reached the market, one youth who was apparently waiting for them whisked out a small hand gun and fired upon them causing serious injuries.

Then the youth immediately left the place riding pillion on a motorcyle of which engine was already started by another youth.

They were rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) at about 6.55 pm.

However, two of them succumbed at the hospital while one is still fighting for life with injuries in the right abdomen, informed the source.

The deceased have been identified as Havildar Sukhdev and Sishram while the injured has been identified as Chandrakanta.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of BSF, G.K.Sharma arrived at the RIMS hospital but refused to comment on the incident.
