Imphal, June 03 2009: A suspected underground activist was shot dead by personnel of 12 Assam Rifles during an early morning encounter at Nampisha village in Ukhrul district today.

According to the PRO Assam Rifles, based on specific information regarding movement of UNLF cadres from border pillar 99 to Nampisha to carry out attack on Assam Rifles company, troops of 12 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector launched operation in general area of Pather Tekri.

At about 3.20 am, troops observed some persons moving under suspicious circumstances.

On being challenged, the suspected UG cadres opened fire and tried to flee taking advantage of thick foliage.

Troops opened fire and killed one of them and recovered one 7.62 mm pistol with magazine and two live rounds of ammunition from his possession.

Meanwhile, police report, said body of the slain UG suspect has been picked up and deposited at RIMS morgue for identification.
