Jail inmate dies in Hospital

Imphal, February 02 2010: An inmate of the Central Jail, Sajiwa was found dead today in suspicious manner at the security ward of the JN Hospital where he had been admitted around two months back.

The 32-year old militant Okram Deben @ Arnold @ Puranthaba son of Tombi of Langthabal Mantrikhong, Imphal west district was among the persons against whom investigation was on in connection with the seven year old case of kidnapping and subsequent murder of 8-year old Luningla Elizabeth daughter of former Manipur minister Francis Ngajokpa in 2003 apart from other charges against him.

He was found death at the security ward of the JN Hospital, Porompat early today where he has been under medical care since November 24, 2009 with complaint of developing a boil at the ankle of his leg.

He was arrested as a cadre of KCP-MC around two and half year back and lodged at Shajiwa Jail after he was detained under NSA.

Several cases registered against him are pending with the state police.

Investigating authorities were also closely examining his involvement in the kidnapping and subsequent murder of 8-year old Luningla Elizabeth, daughter of former Manipur minister Francis Ngajokpa seven years back in November, 2003, a highly releiable source said.

Controversy surfaced on his death when his family expressed that they suspect he was fed him some poisonous substance.

His sister said Deben complaint of feeling unwell when after taking a medicine prescribed by the doctors treating him for the last around 10 days.

"I met with him (Deben) yesterday in the security ward, he complained of feeling unwell after taking the medicine prescribed by the doctors in the last around 10 days," the sister said.

She did not mention the medicine administered to him by the doctors.

No official comment could be immediately obtained from the doctors attending him.

Sources close to the JN Hospital said that he might have died of overdose of sleeping pills recommended to him by the doctors.

Police has registered a case over the death of the inmate.

They said the reason behind his death could be established only after post mortem examination.

Investigation has started, said a police officer in Imphal East District Police when contacted.
