Imphal, June 25 2009: Over 400 migrant workers staged a dharna yesterday at Dharamshala to protest the series of killings of their colleagues by unidentified gunmen in the last many days.

At least 20 migrant workers have been killed while others have been injured in a series of attacks mounted by unidentified gunmen in the last many days.

Organised by the State unit of the All India Trade Union Congress, the migrant workers drawn from different parts of the country staged the protest dharna from 9 am till 5 pm.

In support of the protest, shopkeepers of Thangal bazar downed shutters for the day even as two officials a senior police officer and Labour Commissioner from Bihar are currently in Imphal to take stock of the situation.

AITUC leaders who joined the protest strongly condemned the killings and informed that the matter has already been highlighted to the general secretary Gurudas Das Gupta.

Gurudas Das Gupta has already assured that the matter will be put up on the floor of Parliament to do the needful, said Sotin Kumar, the State unit general secretary of AITUC.

A huge rally is also being planned to protest the killing, said Sotin Kumar.
