Man poisoned to death, JAC formed in protest

Imphal, October 21 2009: Strongly condemning the murder of a 35 year old man by poisoning, the JAC formed in connection with the death has raised a number of demands to book the culprits as well as to clarify on the act, by October 23, otherwise which they would be constrained to launch a series of agitation.

The incident took place yesterday at about 6 pm at Keibi Heikak Mapan under Lamlai police station.

Ningthoujam Nabachandra originally from Khangabok Part III, Terapur Leikai, but staying at his wife's place since the last 4 years at Khundrakpam Makha Leikai near Naorem Bihari College, went out of his home yesterday at about 1.30 pm to collect money.

He was a mobile cloth seller.

Nabachandra visited his brother-in-law at Yumnam Khunou Sanjembam Leikai between 3 and 4 pm after which he left again, saying that we going his dues.

At about 6 pm of yesterday, Nabachandra was waylaid by some unidentified persons near Keibi Heikak, who threatened to shoot him and forced him to drink something from a glass.

After he had drained the contents, the unidentified men told him that it was poison and soon left.

Alarmed, Nabachandra rushed to a nearby house and pleaded for help.

He also narrated what had happened to him.

Nabachandra passed away even as he was being rushed to JN Hospital.

Incensed over the killing, the local people of Khangabok Part III formed a JAC and convened a public meeting today.

During the meeting it was decided that they would not take back the body from RIMS morgue till the culprits are punished by all concerned by October 23 .

It was also decided to demand ex-gratia for the kins of the victim, providing a suitable Government job to the wife of the deceased and to clarify on the killing by October 23 .

The demands are listed in a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister.

If the demands are not met then the JAC would launch a series of agitation, it was decided.

In another incident, a brick layer was found hung to death at the construction site of the TB Hospital Keirao Wangkhem under Irilbung police station today at about 7 am.

The deceased has been identified as one Soibam Asha Kumar (43) of Thangbal Achouba.

He was engaged as a labourer at the construction work of the TB Hospital.

Meanwhile, a 35 year old man, employed as a Peon in the Education Department, who was reported missing after he went out to watch the fire works display on Diwali evening was found dead at the Naga river at the gate of JN Dance Academy.

The deceased is identified as S Kumar staying at DM College campus.
