Police procures 10.14 lakh bullets

Imphal, March 03 2009: A huge quantities of ammunitions and arm accessories totaling to 10,14,086 collected from different factories located in Tamil Nadu, Medhya Pradesh and Maharashtra for the Manipur police arrived in Imphal, a well placed official source said Monday.

The items collected and transported includes 1512 numbers of Rifle 7.62 mm IAI SLR and equal number of Rifle 7.62mm CES items sets, 13470 sets of magazines (Magazine 2A for SLR), 72828 cartridges of 9mm ball, 4944 cartridge of 7.62mm HD, 3708 grenade rifles 36 M HE, 3768 Detonators 7 Sec Delay, 48 equipments of 51 mm mortar E-1 with 5 CES items, 299135 cartridge of SA A7 Mark-II, 435286 cartridge of 7.62mm CTN and 15 numbers of tubeless tyre.

The items are to be procured by the state police under the modernization of police, a Centre sponsored scheme implementing in the state and about Rs 11 lakhs were expend by the police in collecting and transporting, the items which mean for the state police forces, police commandos and IRBns engaging in the counter insurgency operations in the state, the source said.

The ammunitions and accessories of the arms were collected by a team of 71 personnel from different units of the IRBns, MR, district police and other units of the state police.

They took two months since they left Imphal for collection from the arm factories.

The team led by assistant commandant S Nandakishore of 7th Manipur Rifles had left Imphal on December 29 last for collecting ammunitions and arm accessories totaling to 10,14,086 Ordnance Factories located at Tiruchirappali (Tamil Nadu) and Khamaria, Jabalpur (MP) and Varanggoan and Medak (Maharastra).

The items, 1512 numbers of Rifle 7.62 mm IAI SLR and equal number of Rifle 7.62mm CES items sets and 1320 sets of Magazine 2A and 12,150 sets of SLR 2A Magazine were collected from Ordinance Factory, Tiruchapalli (Tamil Nadu).

A total of 72828 cartridges of 9mm ball, 4944 cartridge of 7.62mm HD, 3708 grenade rifles (36 M HE) and 3768 Detonators (7 Sec Delay) were collected from the Ordinance Foctory, Khamaria, Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh).

Others collected items included 48 equipments of 51 mm mortar E-1 with 5 SES from the Gun Cartridge factory, Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), 299135 cartridge of SA A7 Mark-II, 435286 numbers of 7.62 m BDR cartridge, 1,71,925 numbers of 7.62mm CTN cartridge from the Ordinance Factory, Varangaon (Maharastra) and 15 numbers of tubeless tyre from the Ordinance Factory (Maharastra).

The team comprising of 71 personnel led by the assistant commandant S Nandakishore of 7th MR and with Jamandar DK Gangmei of 6th IRB with 10 vehicles collected the items from the factories and arrived on Saturday.

The vehicles with the items have been stationed at 1st MR and 2nd MR complexes in Imphal and checking and verification for formal receive by the state police department has started conducting today by an expert team of the state police, the source added.

Mention may be made that Manipur police department had supplied a total of 1382 sophisticated arms of different kinds, 4867 magazines, 35190 bombs and 15,52,691 arms ammunitions to the needy units or districts police and state security forces in the middle part of the last year 2008 under the Modernization of police force in Manipur.

Out of the 1382 arms supplied 1114 are 7.62 mm SLR IAI, 100 are AK-47 rifles, 168 are5.62 SLR with 2557 magazines of the 7.56 mm SLR, 2310 magazines of AK-47 and 1000 magazine of 5.56 LMG.

Of the total number of ammunitions, 36,1,850 rounds are 6.56 CTN, 660011 rounds are cartridge 7.62x39 mm, 43,0,830 rounds are 7.62 mm CTN.

Apart from these there are 321003 numbers of 7.62 mm BDR ammunitions, three numbers of .38 special cartridge and 3177 numbers of 51 mm Mortar HE bomb in the DG Pool.
