Security alert after killings of 3 non-locals

Imphal, March 02 2009: State chief Minister, O Ibobi today convened a high level security meeting and discussed the law and order situation in the state after a spate of killing of non-locals during the last three days by suspected underground activists.

State Governor, Gurbachan Jagat also reviewed the law and order situation with the Chief Minister this afternoon at the Raj Bhavan.

At least three non-locals�a barber, a sugarcane juice vendor and a labourer were shot dead by unidentified gunmen suspected to be cadres of an underground armed group during the last three days in Imphal areas.

All the victims hailed from Bihar.

The incidents of killing has reminded the people of the state last year's series of shooting down migrant labourers.

The sudden return of killing of migrant labourers has alarmed the state machinery forcing it to intensify patrolling across the valley in the state.

In March last year, suspected armed insurgents had shot dead at least 20 non-local labourers in a few days' time.

Mobile security posts have been opened in all the sensitive areas and in all the main roads leading to Imphal city to check movements of anti-social elements in the greater Imphal areas, and to keep a tight vigil on the movement of the migrant labourers.

Chief Minister, O Ibobi convened a high level security meeting to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in the wake of the killings of the migrant labourers.

The meeting was attended by the top brasses of the state police as well as Central security forces, an official source said.

During the meeting, the chief minister reportedly asked the officers to be alert and to intensify the counter insurgency operations and patrolling in the sensitive areas across the state, the source said.

Later, Chief Minister went to the Raj Bhavan at 3.30 pm and briefed on the measures taken up to maintain law and order situation in the state to the Governor, Gurbachan.

Source said that during the meeting between the two heads of the state, chief minister, O Ibobi briefed on the tighten securities measures taken up in the wake of series of killing of migrant labours in the state.

Suspected militants Sunday shot dead two more non-locals in different parts of the state taking the killed non-local toll to three in two day time.

After killing one sugarcane juice vendor named Rajkumar Choudury (18) son of Ramnath hailing from Bihar at Kwakeithel in Imphal, another non-local labour was shot dead last night at around 8 pm at his own rented house at Langthabal, Imphal.

Earlier on Saturday a non-local barber named Suresh from Sapra district of Bihar was shot dead by the miscreant who entered to the salon pretending himself to be a customer.
